Rupee ends strong by 5 paise at 68.77

Wed July 11 2018

The rupee ended the session up by 5 paise at 68.77 at the interbank forex market today on fresh dollar selling by banks and importers.

Extending losses for the second straight session, the rupee opened a tad weak at 68.83 due to sustained capital outflows and strengthening of the greenback against other currencies overseas. The domestic unit hovered in a range of 68.89 and 68.75 against the dollar.

The greenback rose near an 11-month high against the Chinese yuan and the Australian dollar tumbled after the US said it would slap tariffs on an extra $200 billion of imports from China, sharply escalating tensions between the world's two biggest economies.

Yesterday, the rupee ended lower by 10 paise to close at 68.82 against the US currency due to fresh dollar buying by importers. Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex ended up by 26.31 points or 0.07 per cent at 36,265.93.
