Algeria wheat purchase totalled 210,000 tonnes – traders

November 13, 2017

Algeria’s state grains agency OAIC bought 210,000 tonnes of optional-origin milling wheat in a tender that closed on Thursday, traders said. The volume was higher than reported in initial estimates, which had put the purchase at 60,000 tonnes. Algeria, one of the world’s biggest grain importers, does not disclose details of its tenders and results reported by traders are estimates. Although larger than initially thought, the purchase was less than OAIC typically buys.

This reflected the fact that it was the second time OAIC had sought wheat for December, an unusual move linked to the risk of delays in cargoes arriving from South America, traders said. Traders reiterated that OAIC had paid around $210.50 a tonne, cost and freight included, for the 60,000 tonnes initially reported, but cited a higher price of about $211.75 a tonne C&F for the other 150,000 tonnes. The wheat is for shipment in December. In a separate tender on Thursday, OAIC purchased 19,000 tonnes of optional-origin animal feed barley, paying about $208 a tonne C&F, traders said.
