About 141.59 million ton of foodgrains produced during Kharif ’18-19

Thu Sep 27 2018

As per the First Advance Estimates of the production of major Kharif crops for 2018-19, released by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare recently, the production of foodgrains was about 141.59 million ton (MT).

Of this, rice accounted for 99.24 MT; nutri/coarse cereals accounted for 33.13 MT; maize accounted for 21.47 MT; pulses accounted for 9.2 MT; tur accounted for 4.08 MT and urad accounted for 2.65 MT.

Oilseeds accounted for 22.19 MT. Of this, soybean accounted for 13.46 MT; groundnut accounted for 6.33 MT and castorseed accounted for 1.52 MT. Sugarcane accounted for 383.89 MT.

About 32.48 million bales of cotton (170kg each) and 10.17 million bales of jute and mesta (180kg each) were produced during the year, based on the feedback received from states and validated with information available from other sources.

The aforementioned estimates of production, as per the First Advanced Estimates for 2018-19, were vis-a-vis the comparative estimates for the years 2003-04 onwards.

The cumulative rainfall in the country during the monsoon season, which was between June 1 and September 12, 2018, was eight per cent lower than the long period average (LPA).

The cumulative rainfall in North West India, Central India and South Peninsula during the aforesaid period has been normal. Accordingly, most of the major crop-producing states have witnessed normal rainfall.

However, these are preliminary estimates and would undergo revision based on further feedback from the states.

As per the First Advance Estimates, the total production of kharif foodgrains during 2018-19 is estimated at 141.59 MT. This is higher by 0.86 MT as compared to last year’s kharif foodgrain production of 140.73 MT. Further, kharif foodgrain production is 11.94 MT more than the average production of five years (between 2012-13 and 2016-17) of 129.65 MT.

Total production of Kharif rice is estimated at 99.24 MT. This is higher by 1.74 MT than the last year’s production of 97.50 MT. Further, it is higher by 6.64 MT over the average production of Kharif rice during the last five years.

The total production of nutri and coarse cereals in the country has decreased to 33.13 MT as compared to 33.89 MT during 2017-18. The production of maize is expected to be 21.47 MT, which is higher by 1.23 MT than that of last year’s production of 20.24 MT. Further, this is 4.40 MT more than the average production of maize during the last five years.

The total production of Kharif pulses is estimated at 9.22 MT, which is lower by 0.12 MT than the last year’s production of 9.34 MT. However, kharif pulses estimated production is 2.67 MT more than the last five years average production.

The total production of Kharif oilseeds in the country is estimated at 22.19 MT as compared to 21 MT during 2017-18, i.e., an increase of 1.19 MT. Also, it is higher by 2.02 MT than the average production of last five years.

The production of sugarcane is estimated at 383.89 MT, which is higher by 6.99 MT than the last year’s production of 376.90 MT. Further, it is higher by 41.85 MT than the average production of last five years.

The estimated production of cotton is 32.48 million bales (of 170 kg each) and production of jute and mesta is estimated at 10.17 million bales (of 180 kg each).
