Onion prices soar beyond fixed rates

Nov 8, 2017

Despite the best efforts of the administration, the onion crisis in the city which has resulted in soaring prices has hit the residents hard. Though the price of onions has been fixed at Rs 40 per kilogram in the retail market by the administration, they are being sold at Rs 50 per kilogram or even more in the city."It's surprising that no one can control the price of onion. Besides, it's not available in the retail markets. Yesterday I bought one kilogram of onion for Rs 50 and that too after visiting at least three retailers," said Sujit Sharma, a resident of the Hatigaon area in the city on Tuesday.Though the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has set up teams comprising additional deputy commissioners and other officials to check the price of onions, their efforts have been largely futile so far. The prices which have been soaring for the last few weeks are hurting the local residents who have complained that the prices have never matched the rate fixed by the administration.

"We are checking and following up on the developments. We are planning to carry out surprise raids on the retailers. In the past, we had lodged FIRs against some traders who tried to involve in illegal activities," deputy commissioner M Angamuthu said.Vinod Surana, a member of the Guwahati Potato Onion Merchants' Association (GPOMA), said that there is no crisis in the stock of onions. He also added that the onions can easily be sold at Rs 38 to Rs 40 per kilogram. The retailers, however, alleged that there is a huge crisis in the wholesale market. "I have almost stopped selling onions because of a crisis in the wholesale market," said Mukut Baisya, a retailer in Ganeshguri.
