Centre to offload 35 lt of pulses at a discount

Fri Aug 10 2018

The government on Thursday said that it will offload 34.88 lakh tonne of pulses stock it has procured under price support scheme to states and union territories at discounted rates for various welfare schemes.

Cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA) approved the scheme wherein states can lift tur chana, masoor, moong and urad at a discount of Rs 15 a per kg over the prevailing wholesale market price of the sourcing state on first-come first-serve basis, said a government release. This will be one-time dispensation for 12 months or complete disposal of 34.88 lakh tonne of pulses stock whichever is earlier. “Government will spend Rs 5,237 crore for the implementation of this scheme,” it said.

The decision will enable the states and UTs to use pulses in various welfare schemes like public distribution system, mid-day meal scheme, integrated child development programmes etc. The offtake will also make available the warehouses, which may be required in the coming kharif season for storage of commodities procured under the price support scheme, the statement said. Pulses production has witnessed all time high during the past two years with government making record procurement of pulses during kharif 2017 and rabi 2018 marketing season at 45.43 lakh tonne of pulses.

In the coming Kharif season harvest which begins by October, the production of pulses is expected to be good, the government said.
