India mustard crushing jumps 22% on year to 550,000 tn in Nov

Wednesday, Dec 4 2019

Mustard seed crushing by mills in India jumped 22.2% on year to 550,000 tn in November, according to Mustard Oil Producers Association of India data.Crushing operations picked up pace due to improved demand from oil millers and mustard meal exporters, an official with the organisation said.

Mustard meal demand is firm from traditional buyers, primarily South Korea, traders said. Crushing is also seen 50,000 tn higher on month from October's 500,000 tn, according to the association's estimate.

Higher arrivals in November also supported crushing operations. Arrivals in November were 160,000 tn higher on year at 385,000 tn, the official said. Supply of the oilseed rose because some stockists and farmers have offloaded the crop to create space for storage of kharif crops, traders said.Typically, oil millers carry out crushing operations in full swing during March to June–the peak arrival season for the fresh crop–traders said. Mustard, a crucial rabi oilseed, is sown during Sep-Oct and harvested from February. In Rajasthan, the top producer, total supply was 140,000 tn in November, while it was 70,000 tn in Uttar Pradesh, and 35,000 tn in Madhya Pradesh, the official said.Stock with farmers, processors, stockists, and state-run agencies were at 1.7 mln tn in November, he said. The association has estimated India's mustard output at 8.1 mln tn in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun), up from 7.1 mln tn in the previous year. However, this is lower than the farm ministry's forecast of 9.3 mln tn in its fourth advance estimate. As of Thursday, mustard sowing is 5.4% lagging on year at 5.54 mln ha, according to farm ministry data. Around 80% of mustard sowing across the country has been completed. Last year, the total sown area was at 6.9 mln ha.Mustard accounts for a fourth of the country's total oilseed production, and about 80% of the rabi oilseed basket.
