Agra farmer dumps potato to grow saffron sold at over Rs 80,000 per kg

04 December 2019

Being a temperature-sensitive crop, Saffron is usually concentrated around the Kashmir region but a farmer from Agra's Runakta area has surprisingly decided to forgo the potato crop that is traditionally grown in Agra, to grow this golden cash crop with the cost of over Rs 1.5 lakh.

A senior official from the agriculture department said that Shishupal Singh's efforts are expected to bear fruit by April 2020, when the saffron flowers bloom. If the other farmers also try this crop, they could grow 20-25 kg of saffron per acre of land. With the current price of saffron being Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh per kilogram, this could mean a huge profit to the farmers.

He said that this crop can be prepared in about seven months of time and after that, the saffron flowers are collected, dried and prepared. These flowers are then tested in the laboratory to assess their quality and the issuance of a quality certificate on the basis of which the saffron is sold.

So far, he said, 40-50 farmers have contacted the agriculture department for growing the crop. However, he warned, this crop could only be grown in the supervision of experts.

Farmer Shishupal Singh told India Today that there are several herbs that could be grown in the Agra region and which could fetch a high price in the market.A lot of Ayurvedic medicine companies pay in advance to buy the herbs and herbal culture could bring in a lot of money to the farmers.
