Ukraine boosts sugar exports by almost 30% in May

14 June 2019

Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Tajikistan were major importers of Ukrainian sugar.

The National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine (NASPU) Ukrtsukor says sugar exports from Ukraine in May 2019 grew by almost 30% from April 2019, to 41,300 tonnes.

"In May this marketing year [MY], Ukrainian producers exported 41,300 tonnes of sugar, which was almost 30% up against April," the Association's press service said on June 12. Azerbaijan remained a key importer of Ukrainian sugar in May with shipments accounting for almost a third, or 29%, of all deliveries in the fifth month. Shares of Turkey and Tajikistan were 17% and 16%, respectively, the press service said, referring to Deputy Chair of Ukrtsukor's Board Ruslana Butylo. From September 2018 to May 2019, Ukrainian producers shipped 378,200 tonnes of sugar abroad, which was 13% down year-over-year, it said. As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in January used its quota for duty-free exports of sugar to the European Union for 2019. The country in MY 2017-2018 cut sugar exports by 27%, to 564,000 tonnes. Ukrainian enterprises reduced sugar production by 15% during the sugar refining season of MY 2018-2019, to 1.7 million tonnes.
